Literature review reveals aging challenges in spina bifida and brain injury, highlighting long-term care needs for affected individuals.
An article previously published in the Journal of Life Care Planning (Mitchell, 1. 2004) discussed the effects of aging for individuals with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and amputation. This article will focus on the effects of aging for individuals with a diagnosis of post-polio syndrome, spina bifida, early onset neuromuscular diseases, Down syndrome, brain injury, and juvenile arthritis, by providing a review of literature on these specific diagnoses. In order to effectively and accurately address potential long term care needs for clients with the above-named diagnoses, life care planners should be aware of the issues possibly faced by individuals aging with these disabilities.
