Assessment reveals significant prevalence of maternal morbidity linked to cesarean delivery, suggesting risk factors can inform better outcomes.
( Obstet Gynecol . 2025. doi: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000006041) The most common inpatient surgical procedure across the globe is cesarean delivery (CD), with the annual number of cases projected to approach 38 million by 2030. In the United States, the rate of CD was 32.1% in 2022. The risks of CD include vascular, visceral, soft tissue, and nerve damage, which can lead to severe morbidity; previous studies of maternal morbidity related to CD have had large variation and inconsistency in definitions of surgical morbidity. This study was designed to assess a composite measure of severe perioperative surgical morbidity for CD, examining its prevalence and risk factors.
