Randomized control trial shows that epidural morphine can lower opioid use in postpartum pain management, indicating benefits for recovery and breastfeeding.
( Anesth Analg . 2025;140:1063-1070. doi: 10.1213/ANE.0000000000006987) The article presents findings from a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of a single 2 mg dose of epidural preservative-free morphine on pain management and opioid use after vaginal delivery (VD). Postpartum pain is a critical issue that affects a mother's physical comfort and emotional well-being, potentially interfering with mother-infant bonding, breastfeeding, and mental health. While the use of acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has become common for postpartum pain relief, opioids are still frequently administered. Given concerns about opioid-related adverse effects and the potential for dependency, this study aimed to assess whether a small dose of epidural morphine could reduce the need for additional opioids without compromising recovery outcomes.
