Observational analysis reveals sediment characteristics in Lake Biwa, suggesting implications for Baikal drilling project.
Background program and results of drilling and investigating sediments of Lake Biwa, Japan, are considered in short. The maximum depth of drilling was 1442.5 m. Two horizons were penetrated. The first of them, to the 911.4 m mark, is essentially lacustrine. The deeper horizon is made up of dense Cenozoic clays whose origin is not understood. Complex study of the borehole core by various methods was carried out permitting the lake history during the Glacial and Postglacial periods to be decoded. Based on the Lake Biwa drilling experience, some recommendations are given for implementing the International Project of drilling on Lake Baikal.
