Examines sedimentary layers in the Lake Baikal area using seismic waves, suggesting new insights into geological structures.
Until recently data on the Baikal sedimentary cover was mainly obtained by gravimetric survey. The RWM seismic prospecting carried out near the village of Listvyanka has shown that beginning from distances of 22–25 km refracted wave from the crystalline basement surface traced at a depth of about 9 km are recorded in the furst arrivals. The Cenozoic sedimentary cover is about 4.5 km thick. The base of the sedimentary sequence is the surface of the Precenozoic basement made up of sediments from ancient depressions.
