Research demonstrates how market structure impacts competition among specialists, suggesting management strategies for retail entities.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of market structure on intratype competition--specialists versus generalists. Also, the effects of intratype competition on the overall retail structure are examined. The manuscript first develops a conceptual model based on theories of spacial retailing. Following this the model is adapted and examined in the context of intratype competition. The results indicate that market structure strongly affects the structure of retailing indirectly through its effects on intratype competition. Also, competition affects the structure of generalist stores, while specialty stores are less susceptible to competitive pressures from either generalists or other specialists. Lastly, implications for managers are developed.
