Research finds three dimensions of fan motivation in Division I college sports, suggesting factors like socialization affect attendance.
The Churchill Paradigm (1979) was used to develop the Sports Fan Motivation scale (SFMS), designed to measure factors motivating students to attend Division I college sporting events. A two-phase research study provided strong evidence that the SFMS consisted of three dimensions: winning, socialization, and history/tradition. Factor analysis and reliability testing revealed a scale structure that closely approximated a priori specification and that exhibited acceptable internal reliability.
