Concept analysis reveals self-care impacts patient safety and reduces stress and burnout among nurses, suggesting a need for ongoing education on self-care practices.
Background Nurses practice in High Expectations and Risk Occupations (HEROs). Expectations and risk can lead to stress, potential burnout, and devastating consequences to nurses, the nursing profession, and person/patient safety. Therefore, self‐care for nurses is paramount to protecting nurses, the profession, and person/patient well‐being. Purpose The researchers performed this concept analysis to inform a concise definition of self‐care for nurses. Methods The researchers employed Walker and Avant’s concept analysis methodology, along with an extensive literature review. Findings The researchers formulated a definition of self‐care for nurses that is uniquely attributed to nursing, based on concept analysis. Discussion Self‐care is an important concept and essential practice for nurses. Socialization regarding the how‐to and necessity of an ongoing self‐care journey is crucial for both nursing students and nurses.
