To evaluate the effect of anti-seizure medications on the frequency and distribution of interictal epileptiform discharges in patients with focal epilepsy.
Retrospective review of EEGs of patients with focal epilepsy on a single ASM.
Two-hour EEG epochs were assessed: one during high ASM dosing and another after weaning.
IEDs were manually counted and characterized during both epochs.
Patients on levetiracetam had a significant increase in IED frequency after ASM weaning (mean 40.6 to 71.4, p < 0.001).
Sodium channel blockers showed a non-significant trend towards reduced IEDs (p = 0.065).
Some IEDs were only observed after ASMs were weaned, particularly in patients on levetiracetam.
