The proposed SPR sensor significantly improves acetone concentration detection, suggesting broad application potential.
The present study demonstrates the design of a highly sensitive acetone sensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-induced Tamm resonances within a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D-PC) structure. The proposed sensor integrates a BK7 prism, a 70-nm gold film, a 100-nm air cavity, and a 1D photonic crystal composed of alternating MaF 2 and Si layers with respective thicknesses of 250 nm and 150 nm, all deposited on a glass substrate. The transfer matrix method (TMM) based MATLAB and finite element method based COMSOL Multiphysics 6.1 simulations are used for obtaining the results of the proposed work. The proposed sensor is capable of detecting any minute change in acetone concentration by shifting the Tamm resonance peak inside photonic band gap due to change in the refractive index of acetone sample. The modeling results shows that the proposed sensor achieves a maximum sensitivity of 1000 nm/RIU under normal incidence which can be further enhanced to 4000 nm/RIU corresponding to 70 ° of incident angle under s-polarized case. The highest recorded figure of merit (FOM) and quality factor (QF) values of the sensor are 2870.2 and 3520, respectively. The simple, label-free and rapid detection capabilities of proposed design may be useful for designing of future sensors of different domains.
