Analysis demonstrates effective assessment of soil organic carbon in cropland using remote sensing and modelling approaches, suggesting improved modelling efficiency.
Assessing soil organic carbon stock changes for cropland is needed in different context (national inventories, voluntary carbon market, CAP) but it is still quite challenging. It can be achieved through measure and remeasure of SOC or by modelling. Yet, different modelling approaches can be considered: soil centred modelling approaches, ecosystem modelling with classical agronomical models (e.g. STICS), parsimonious modelling. Each of those approaches present advantages and limitations that are briefly discussed. Then we focus on the different modelling approaches and on how remote sensing combined with modelling can answer to some of those limitations. Finally, we illustrate with one tool that combines parsimonious modelling and remote sensing data assimilation, the AgriCarbon-EO processing chain, how the different components of the carbon budget can be assessed with this kind of approach nd how it meets the requirements for MRV in different context of applications including the CRCF.
