Retrospective analysis shows genetic proximity of HBV in Cercopithecidae, suggesting zoonotic transmission implications.
RNA extraction from five HBsAg‐positive Cercopithecidae samples, followed by semi‐nested PCR of the four overlapping regions of the HBV genome and phylogenetic analyses, yielded a complete HBV genome. This strain from a Cercopithecus preussi sample has close genetic proximity to isolates from Cameroonian great apes, suggesting cross‐species transmission of HBV.
