Life increases entropy, yet most biospheres appear to reach quasi-steady states. Here we propose the Entropic Utility Hypothesis (EUH): high-level, predictive, symbolically-mediated consciousness functions as a thermodynamic amplifier, enabling lineages to escape bounded dissipation and sustain exponential energy-throughput growth via cumulative culture. Integrating non-equilibrium thermodynamics, the free-energy principle, and cosmic energy-rate-density trends, EUH predicts that only systems capable of intergenerational knowledge accumulation and abstract foresight achieve open-ended scaling of entropy production. Minimal quantitative reasoning suggests human-scale predictive activity increases metabolic energy dissipation by factors of 1.5–3 compared with reflexive states, while cumulative culture multiplies planetary energy exploitation orders of magnitude beyond natural ecosystems. The hypothesis is falsifiable: (1) conscious states with active prediction and planning show measurable increases in entropy production; (2) only lineages with cumulative culture exhibit unbounded civilizational energy growth; (3) advanced artificial predictive systems accelerate energy gradient exploitation; (4) techno signatures are transient and predominantly waste-heat in origin. EUH provides a physically grounded explanation for why intelligence evolves, why technological civilizations scale rapidly, and why the Fermi paradox may be resolved by brief, high-dissipation growth phases followed by low-emission optimization.
