Ismat Chughtai is undoubtedly one of the most fearless as well as controversial women writers of the Indian subcontinent. A prominent ‘progressive’ and ardent feminist voice in the Urdu literary world, Chughtai boldly wrote against the gendered double standards and oppressive patriarchal structures and denounced the exploitation of the poor, underprivileged and marginalized sections of the society. Her memoir, Kaghazi Hai Pairahan, translated into English as A Life in Words, is expressive of her honest and bold views on myriad issues ranging from male hegemony, female illiteracy and subjugation to religious bigotry, false morality , oppression of the poor and underprivileged, divisions along caste, creed, religion, factions and wars. Narrating incidents from her personal life and projecting them in a wider social perspective, she strongly criticizes the societal and patriarchal customs and norms and advocates for the rights and freedom of women. This paper attempts to explore Ismat Chughtai’s memoir as an honest, bold and compelling life narrative that deals with not only personal but also political and global issues.
