Research reveals enhanced thermal performance in batteries using phase change materials, suggesting improved battery performance.
This study investigates the integration of phase change material (PCM) composites into battery systems as an innovative approach to enhance thermal management. By analyzing PCM properties like thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and compatibility with battery materials, the research demonstrates that PCM composites can significantly reduce peak temperatures and stabilize temperature fluctuations during battery operation. Furthermore, the use of PCM composites minimizes thermal stress on battery components, which is crucial for maintaining battery integrity and performance over extended periods. The study also explores the thermal performance of a composite mixture containing Paraffin wax (PW), Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT), and silver nanoparticles at various mass fractions using copper foil as an electrode to connect to the PCM. The outer layer of the PCM was wrapped with PW at a mass ratio of 1:1. The dimensions of the single-cell Thermal management structure were 30 mm × 30 mm × 65 mm. The electric power was gradually increased from 1W to 5W, and the battery temperature was monitored for different time intervals. This study indicates that the battery temperature reached a peak at 46°C and stabilized, indicating that the PCM effectively prevents further temperature rise. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive evaluation of PCM composites in battery thermal management, offering valuable insights into their potential for future development and practical application in the evolving landscape of energy storage technologies.
