Trauma informed care training for care providers working with people with a learning disability

People with a learning disability (PwLD) are more likely to experience traumatic events. Trauma Informed Care (TIC) is an organisational framework designed to understand the impact of trauma, reduce harm, and promote healing. This study aimed to explore the perceived effectiveness and usefulness of TIC training delivered to learning disability specialist care providers by the Psychology Team. Self-report evaluation forms were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results showed improvement in participants’ knowledge of, confidence in, and skills applying TIC principles over the course of the training. The training received positive feedback, with participants emphasising the need for additional comprehensive training. Easy to read summary ■ Lots of people who have a learning disability experience trauma. Support workers should learn about trauma. ■ Support workers in Birmingham went on trauma training. They said that the training helped them to understand trauma. They said that the training helped them to better support people with a learning disability who have experienced trauma. ■ The support workers want more training on trauma.
