The National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) has been playing a central role in supporting national policies and promoting sustainable fisheries through scientific research and technological innovation. As seafood has become a key component of a healthy and sustainable diet, NIFS has continuously developed the Korean Fisheries Products and Foods Nutrient Database to provide reliable nutritional information on Bluefood. Since its first publication in 1956, the database has been continuously expanded and refined, and now includes comprehensive nutrient data for more than 500 seafood species, encompassing fish, shellfish, crustaceans, cephalopods, seaweeds, and processed products. The database is updated every five years to reflect changes in climate, species distribution, and consumption patterns. These data are integrated into the national Integrated Food Nutrient Database and widely used in public health, institutional dietary management and industry applications. Recent efforts include expanding nutrient profiling to imported seafood and developing AI-based predictive models to estimate nutrient changes during processing and cooking. High-quality, standardized data produced by NIFS serve as a foundation for emerging food-tech innovations, enabling personalized nutrition and sustainable food system development. Moving forward, NIFS aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of its data and to link nutritional, functional, and bioactive component information to strengthen Korea’s seafood industry and promote healthy, sustainable diets.
