This is the first of a two part series on augmentative and alternative communication (M C) and life care planning. The purpose of this first part is to provide a basic overview of AAC by identifying individuals who may benefit from MC and describing key components of AAC assistive technology, service, and supports. The article focuses on applying the principles of evidence-based practice in the assessment of and intervention for high technology AAC solutions in order for life care planners to ensure quality outcomes. An M C Checklist for life care planners also is included. Part two of the series will be dedicated to examples of individuals who rely on MC and tools and resources to support life care planning involving AAC.
