This article examines the medieval origins of national self-stereotypes by focusing on the case of Poland. It argues that concepts of gender and the natural order were crucial to the development of a Polish national identity in the Latin writings of historians active from the twelfth century onward, with special reference to neighbouring groups (especially Ruthenians and Germans) as cultural foils.
