Abstract This article discusses Barnes’s pedagogical and critical work in the spirit of this special issue exploring how Blackness was “constructed and problematized by a hegemonic global structure across national boundaries during the long nineteenth century.” That process unfolded in stages: first, to create and to center feminist genealogies of the romantic and the sublime in several upper-division literature seminars; and then to revise them with anti-racist pedagogies. The case sequence discussed centers Harriet Tubman within a constellation of Romantic luminaries.
