Purpose This study aims to evaluate the effect of relationship stability on buyer–supplier relationship commitment (BSRC), and subsequently investigate the impact of BSRC on environmental performance and competitive performance in Bangladesh's manufacturing sector. Additionally, this study also evaluates the moderating role of supply chain coordination on the relationship between BSRC-environmental performance and BSRC-competitive performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on social exchange theory, we test the hypotheses using structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression analysis. A close-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from 207 Bangladeshi manufacturing firms. Findings Relationship stability positively influences BSRC and BSRC also impacts environmental performance and competitive performance. Additionally, supply chain coordination strengthens the relationship between BSRC and competitive performance. However, supply chain coordination does not significantly moderate the relationship between BSRC and environmental performance. The results also facilitate managers to enhance environmental and competitive performance through relationship stability and BSRC. Originality/value Relationship stability is firstly examined as an antecedent of BSRC in multiple industrial setup and BSRC as an antecedent of environmental performance and competitive performance. Additionally, this study investigates the moderating role of supply chain coordination on the relationships between BSRC-environmental performance and BSRC-competitive performance.
