This article synthesises evidence on associations between metabolic health and psychological or behavioural outcomes and translates these insights into practice for psychologists and educators. It advances an integrative, non-reductive framework for the aetiology of psychological distress—especially depressive symptomatology—while indicating that, in selected contexts, metabolic contributions (e.g., insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation) may operate alongside psychological and social determinants. Grounded in interoceptive energy allostasis, the framework also recognises reverse pathways whereby stress, sleep disruption, and reduced activity may worsen metabolic risk. Building on this, we propose a theoretical and operational model for interdisciplinary work, noting that single-discipline approaches and fragmented services contribute to the physical-health gap in severe mental illness. From a sociological perspective, schools function as meso-level institutional fields (in Bronfenbrenner’s terms) that organise time, material availability, and behavioural norms, thereby shaping pupils’ metabolic environments. This paper focuses on schools as a paradigmatic case because these structures are amenable to policy and organisational change, including choice architecture around food availability and salience, andbecause such leverage is increasingly pertinent given the rising prevalence of childhood obesity. It outlines pragmatic levers for education settings, to be implemented alongside a practice framework for clinicians that emphasises conversational assessment of energy-related cues, routine- and environment-focused supports, and early liaison with primary care when “red flags” warrant medical screening.The paper closes with a research agenda (stratification by baseline metabolic state; joint psychosocial–metabolic outcomes; life-course moderators), ethical guidance on scope and referral, and limitations of a narrative synthesis. Overall, metabolic perspectives enrich—rather than supersede—psychological and social formulations,supporting coordinated, feasible actions across clinical and educational contexts.
