Chapter analyzes gender disparities in brand placements and chart hits in the music industry, highlighting implications.
This chapter aims to illuminate gender inequality by examining both brand placements and the music industry. First, we analysed whether male artists had more hits than female artists on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Next, we assessed gender disparities in product placements within music videos by counting the brands associated with men and women, including the types of brands and products. Additionally, we reviewed the top 30 chart hits and 420 music videos of best-selling songs from 2003 to 2016. The results reveal ongoing inequality in both the advertising and music industries. However, they also show the influence of female artists, as women, despite being less represented overall, achieved more hits on the Billboard Hot 100 during this period than men.
