Analytical and numerical analysis reveals shear-off behavior in adhesive contacts with functionally graded materials, indicating significant influences of grading characteristics.
The aim of the present paper is to study the shear-induced behavior of plane strain adhesive contacts between elastically graded solids. For this purpose, closed-form analytical solutions for power-law graded media are derived using the fracture mechanics concept. Furthermore, the shear-off behavior of a rigid cylinder in contact with an elastically homogeneous substrate coated with a functionally graded layer is investigated numerically using the finite element method. Interestingly, the two differently graded media give qualitatively similar shear-off behavior; the grading steepness and direction, as well as the characteristic depth, strongly influence the (critical) shear-off force and the shear-induced area reduction. The results are valuable for predicting shear-induced peeling in biomechanical systems with functionally graded materials.
