Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of medical waste management practices at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Nigeria, using a civil and environmental engineering framework. It evaluates waste generation, segregation, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal systems, as well as staff awareness and institutional compliance with national and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The findings highlight both strengths and infrastructural gaps within the hospital’s waste management system and propose engineering-based interventions for improving environmental safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The work contributes empirical data and applied engineering insights relevant to healthcare facilities in developing-country contexts.
