Abstract This paper presents a finite element modelling method to simulate the stress‐strain response of concrete confined by fibre‐reinforced polymer (FRP) and steel using the Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model within ABAQUS. The model includes four main features: the strain hardening‐softening rule, damage parameter, yield criterion and flow rule. Model validation results are presented by comparing the predicted stressstrain responses of FRP‐confined concrete with experimental data. Following the validation of the FRP‐confined concrete model, the development of the model is extended to FRP‐confined CFSTs. The finite element modelling procedures were shown to predict the stress‐strain response of concrete confined by FRP and by both FRP and steel with excellent degree of accuracy.
