Abstract The strength of fillet welds with 90° dihedral angles has been established with a significant number of experimental tests. However, research on the behavior of fillet welds with skewed dihedral angles is unavailable. The current design method for skewed fillet welds is similar to that of non‐skewed welds, with the strength based on the weld throat calculated as the shortest distance from the root to the face of the weld. In this paper, the results of a research project on welded joints with skewed dihedral angles are presented. The project included 35 experimental tests. Based on the results, new design recommendations are provided.
