This research brief presents a retrofit plan to enhance energy output in utility-scale solar facilities, suggesting practical implementations.
Conventional crystalline-silicon PV modules convert ~18–22% of incident solar irradiance to electricity and reject most of the incident energy as heat. By deploying photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) hybrid modules (water or air cooled), backside heat exchangers, thermoelectric augmentation for edge gain, active cooling to lower cell temperature, and by pairing PV fields with thermal storage and pumped hydro, a utility site can raise total usable energy (electricity + heat + dispatchable output) by a factor of ~2×–3× compared with PV-only deployment. This paper presents detailed schematics, per-m² calculations, control/communication architecture, and an implementation roadmap for retrofitting large utility parks (e.g., Khavda/Bhadla-scale sites) to increase system-level output and grid value.
