Archaeological trial trench evaluation uncovers medieval features in Harwell, indicating historical land use.
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Atkins on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council to carry out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on an 8ha block of land in Harwell, immediately east and adjacent to the A34. The evaluation identified a low background of archaeological features; comprising a total of 15 features within 10 of the 40 excavated trenches. However, the majority of these features (13 features) are related to likely medieval and post-medieval agricultural activity and comprised field boundaries, drainage channels and ridge and furrow ploughing.
