This activity module engages students in determining how watershed characteristics influence downstream water quality through field sampling and analysis. Students work collaboratively to develop testable hypotheses linking upland soil properties to water-quality parameters in receiving ponds. The module integrates field sampling techniques, analysis, and data interpretation. Students collect soil samples from contributing drainage areas representing different land management practices and measure parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, nitrate, salinity, soil porosity and permeability, and turbidity. Students will gain experience with soil and water sample collection protocols, soil and water quality monitoring equipment, and statistical analysis. Students will learn how watershed features affect downstream water quality outcomes.
