A systematic review characterizes metastatic meningioma in children and adolescents, indicating a need for targeted screening.
Metastatic meningioma in childhood and adolescence is an extremely rare entity, with limited available data. We sought to characterize features, treatment and outcomes by performing a systematic review of all cases of metastatic meningioma diagnosed before 18 years of age published since 1989. We found metastases predominantly occurred in patients with grade 2 and 3 tumors and at time of relapse. Most metastatic sites were extracranial, with lung/pleura the dominant extracranial site. The remainder occurred at distant sites within the central nervous system. We propose that screening of these sites should be considered if relapse is suspected.
