Case report demonstrates histological features of sclerosing epithelioid leiomyoma in a woman with abnormal bleeding, highlighting its rarity.
The most frequent benign smooth muscle neoplasms affecting the uteri of women in the reproductive age range are the leiomyomas. They tend to present as pelvic masses or with complaints related to abnormal uterine bleeding. Leiomyoma histologically show haphazardly arranged interlacing fascicles of smooth muscles. Histopathological subtypes of leiomyomas are many and recognising rare forms of leiomyomas is crucial to prevent over diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. One of the rare subtypes of leiomyomas namely, epithelioid leiomyoma show cells that have a round to polygonal architecture with central nucleus and abundant cytoplasm. More so rarer is the sclerosing variant of epithelioid subtype of leiomyoma which show abundant sclerosis in the supporting stroma. A case of 34 year female who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and underwent myomectomy, histologically showed features of sclerosing variant of epithelioid subtype of leiomyoma is presented here to emphasise the entity and to notify the rarity of its presentation.
