Case reports demonstrate severe eyelid injuries in children from padlock shackles, highlighting treatment challenges.
Pediatric eyelid injuries present unique clinical and surgical challenges in view of the delicate nature of ocular structures and the potential for long-term complications. Seemingly, trivial, everyday objects like padlocks can lead to severe injuries in children. Here, we present two cases of eyelid injuries caused by padlock shackles, showcasing the diagnostic challenges and treatment strategies involved. Case 1 involves a 2.5-year-old female with a lower canalicular injury, managed with lid repair and a Minimonoka stent. Case 2 describes a 3-year-old male with a lower lid laceration, managed conservatively. This article aims to highlight the critical aspects of managing pediatric eyelid injuries and underscores the importance of tailored treatment approaches. These incidents also highlight the need for increased awareness and education about potential hazards in a child’s environment to prevent such dreadful accidents.
