Game-based learning, which applies games to help learners to learn, are an effective tool to improve learners’ motivation. Due to its complex operation mechanism and the influence of many factors, it is often difficult for many learners to make efficient use of game-based learning. This paper aims to dissect the role of game-based learning in enhancing Asian teenagers’ motivation for English learning through literature analysis to help learners understand its operation mechanisms. Also, this paper analyses two variables affecting the efficiency and outcomes of game-based learning. This paper believes that learning motivation can become better if game-based learning is properly implemented. When participating in game-based learning, learners become motivated because they have fun and improve their academic performance. The game mechanisms and gender differences can become the variables affecting the efficiency and outcomes of game-based learning. This paper’s findings may help Asian teenagers when they want to make efficient use of game-based learning.
