Simulations identify conditions that enhance pedestrian flow through bottlenecks, suggesting practical design considerations.
Empirical studies in the past have produced different results about whether an obstacle placed in front of a bottleneck can increase the flow of pedestrians through the bottleneck. Here, simulations are used to try to determine the conditions under which an increased flow is most likely to occur. Results indicate that the bottleneck must be narrow; narrower than commonly implemented in buildings.
