About 40 observations of moderate or severe high-level turbulence in clear air have been reported in Australia since February, 1953. These reports have been examined in relation to the relevant jet stream patterns, stability characteristics, pressure-height contours, fronts and topography, and the probable causes of the turbulence set out.
