Southern hemisphere circulation patterns and anomalies for summer (December to February) 1995-96 are reviewed, with emphasis given to Pacific Basin climate indicators, and Australian rainfall and temperature patterns. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) peaked in January. Most other Pacific Basin indicators, particularly subsurface ocean temperatures, showed the decline of a weak cool episode. Rainfall was below average across a large part of central and northern Australia, while temperatures were generally below normal in the southeast, although there was a bias towards positive anomalies in western and northern areas.
