The starting point for the project is an extensive literature review aiming at identifying a list ofcandidate VOCs for the detection of such pests. For some pests, such as Phytophthora ramorumand Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, literature data are too scarce for defining a list of candidateVOCs. In the case of the other target pests, a review of the available literature by experts in thefield, allowed compiling preliminary lists of target VOCs which need to be complemented andrefined with further experiments. The PurPest project will build on these lists and expand themwith new candidate VOCs by studying pest and attacked plant emissions. Candidate VOC lists willbe central for the development of the SSP.
