This project improves practical skills and collaboration in mechanical engineering through a digital twin robotic arm platform.
Practical learning of digital technology is an important component of advanced mechanical engineering courses. However, to effectively conduct this course, real case study experience is essential. To reach this objective, this study proposes a practical learning project on development of digital twin-based robotic arm platform. This study decomposes the digital twin-based robotic arm platform into several parts applicable for collaboration. By developing this platform, it is possible to comprehend the capabilities and constraints of digital technologies (e.g., 3D modeling, virtual interaction, information communication, and so on) and to establish an environment of collaborative learning. A general schedule is presented for developing a digital twin-based robotic arm platform towards an industrial work cell within twelve weeks. The findings reveal that in addition to significantly improving trainees’ knowledge and practical skills in the application of digital tools, the collaborative learning atmosphere created by the course also contributes to the learners’ achievements.
