Abstract

This study focuses on social security and poverty reduction in ONELGA, Rivers State. The study was induced by the level of poverty prevalence among the rural dwellers in ONELGA community despite the abundance of natural resources, complimented by the efforts made by the government to improve the living condition of the people in the rural areas. It was geared toward finding out whether implementation of social security programs and projects in the area can significantly improve the lives and standard of living of people in ONELGA. Data collected for this study is basically secondary data. It was observed that effective implementation of social security programs and projects will help to reduce poverty in ONELGA. It was then recommended that the state government should resuscitate and continue the free school bus programme, the free medical care programme for the continued benefits of the citizens and the state. The state-owned syringe manufacturing company should also be rehabilitated to help in the areas of employee’s generation and poverty reduction and there should also be a positive re-orientation on social security among Keywords: social security, poverty reduction, community development projects and programs.
