Experimental setup explores new plasma regime to measure core properties in thermonuclear fusion, suggesting improved stability.
An experimental setup is proposed for the study of a new plasmaregime, in which a central hot core is stabilized by an external plasmashell. The core is formed by impulsive compression and maintainedby the shell pressure, rather than by a magnetic field. The main goalis to measure the time profiles of temperature, pressure, and densityof the core, as well as the transport properties of the plasma. Thedifference from existing approaches (ITB, pellet heating, MTF) lies inthe multilayer impulsive structure, reproducibility, and a long lifetimeof the core relative to the pulse.
