Key Points

  • The research focuses on the development of vaccines against chronic Trypanosoma cruzi infection and the associated challenges.
  • Review of pre-clinical studies on vaccine development for Chagas disease.
  • Discussion on the synergy between vaccines and drug development efforts.
  • Analysis of challenges faced in clinical trials for vaccines and drugs.
  • Promising findings from pre-clinical studies indicate potential effectiveness.
  • Synergistic approaches may enhance the clinical development of drugs and vaccines.
  • Identified common challenges that can be addressed collectively for better outcomes.

Abstract

Pre-clinical studies broadly support the clinical development of a Chagas disease vaccine, particularly for a therapeutic vaccine. Synergy with drug development efforts, which face many of the same challenges, may provide new opportunities to strengthen clinical development and trials of drugs, vaccines and combined therapies.
