This research aims to understand the origin and dynamics of exocomets in the beta Pictoris system.
Performed spectroscopic observations using Space Telescope and High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher.
Detected three exocomet signatures at low radial velocities from multiple spectral lines.
Modeled excitation states of gaseous tails to derive transit distances.
Three distinct exocometary tails detected at distances of 0.88 ± 0.08, 4.7 ± 0.3, and 1.52 ± 0.15 AU.
These distances are significantly greater than previous estimates of under 0.2 AU.
Different excitation states of exocometary gases indicate varied transit distances from the star.

New observations reveal varying transit distances of exocomets, suggesting unique dynamics in the beta Pic system.

Vrignaud et al. (2026) studied this question.
