Abstract

ABSTRACT Retinal integration refers to the neural interactions between the bipolar, the horizontal, and the amacrine cells within the retina. These serve to modify the primary output of the photo receptors before the neural signal reaches the ganglion cells. Many subsequent visual perceptions are monitored and controlled at these early synapses. Among these are contrast perception, visual acuity and. perhaps, color vision. There are some indications that a centrifugal binocular influence may be found in this same retinal area. The quantitative modifications of the electroretinogram can be shown to be related to retinal integration. Each of these aspects bears a close relationship to the clinical assessment of retinal function.
