Research demonstrates oxygen transfer through contact lenses affects cornea health, suggesting new monitoring techniques.
The polarographic oxygen sensor when applied to a soft contact lens worn in the eye shows that oxygen moves through the lens material to the cornea. The rate of oxygen tension decline recorded by the sensor is significantly different if the cornea under the soft contact lens is denuded of its epithelium. A method for monitoring epithelial regrowth under a soft contact lens when worn as a bandage is suggested.
