Cytokine release syndrome and sepsis are linked to rapid myocardial calcification and GLS worsening to -9%.
Why the study?
Rapid development of myocardial calcification in the setting of cytokine release syndrome and sepsis is exceptional and had not been previously reported.
This first reported case demonstrates that advanced echocardiography (GLS and myocardial work) can detect rapid functional decline from extensive myocardial calcification following CRS and sepsis.

Alerts clinicians to monitor for calcification in CRS/sepsis; leaves open whether GLS tracks reversible injury.
Muñoz et al. (2026) studied this question. Cytokine release syndrome and sepsis caused rapid extensive myocardial calcification with systolic dysfunction, shown by GLS decline from −22% to −9% and GWI of 780 mmHg%.
