The finding of improved methods in the treatment of amblyopia, eccentric fixation and anomalous correspondence continue to occupy high priority in the strabismus clinics of the world. A radical approach in the treatment of amblyopia connected with eccentric fixation is being tried out by Professor Cüppers and his team at the Giessen University Eye Hospital. The sensory anomaly of eccentric fixation is being influenced through motor pathways. Disruption of the faulty sensory coupling in anomalous correspondence is attempted by high‐powered prisms combined with active reinforcement between areas of normal correspondence. Prisms with or without muscle surgery are also utilized in the treatment of certain types of nystagmus. Although no statistical survey is as yet available as to the success rate of these new techniques, Cüppers claims significant good results in a number of individual cases.
