Evaluation of weldability of Inconel 625 via laser beam welding indicates effective fusion with no defects.
The weldability of Inconel 625 produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is evaluated. The evaluation is based on the metallurgical characterization of a bead-on-plate weld made by the Laser Beam Welding (LBW) process. The characterization included optical and electron microscopy, and the EDS and EBSD techniques were employed to analyse the chemical composition and the microstructure of the bead. The results reported in the present work confirmed that the fusion zone is well penetrated, and it is not possible to detect any significant welding defect, such as cracks or porosity. Laser Beam Welding is thus deemed a promising technique to weld Ni-based superalloys obtained through additive manufacturing.
