Purpose Corporate spin-offs are a widely used restructuring strategy aimed at enhancing shareholder value. Following a spin-off, the subsidiary operates independently under a new management team and must rapidly adapt to external environmental conditions. Drawing on survival-based theory, this study aims to examine how environmental munificence, dynamism and complexity shape early post-spin-off market valuation by influencing strategic discipline, resource prioritization and adaptive decision-making during the transition to independence. Design/methodology/approach This study investigates the first two-year market performance of 132 US spin-offs between 2000 and 2014. Spun-off companies are identified using the SDC Platinum database. Governance data are obtained from proxy statements filed with the SEC, while firm- and industry-level data are drawn from COMPUSTAT. All models are estimated using robust quantile regression techniques. Findings The results show that environmental dynamism significantly enhances post-spin-off market valuation, whereas environmental munificence negatively affects performance. Environmental complexity does not exhibit a significant relationship with market outcomes. Together, these findings suggest that spin-offs are more likely to succeed when dynamic conditions reward strategic agility, while abundant resources may weaken early-stage strategic discipline. Originality/value This research enriches the spin-off literature by demonstrating the interaction between environmental factors and firm characteristics in determining the performance of newly independent firms. These findings provide a deeper understanding of how external conditions shape market performance and thus offer valuable guidance for spun-off subsidiaries navigating post-spin-off challenges and informing future research and strategic decisions in this very domain.
