Retrospective surveillance finds rising resistance in Bacteroides fragilis to metronidazole in NSW, suggesting urgent need for susceptibility testing.
Background: The Bacteroides fragilis group (BFG) is an important part of human gastrointestinal flora and is implicated in a wide range of clinical infections. Rising resistance rates of the BFG to anti-anaerobic agents including metronidazole are increasingly reported, however anaerobic susceptibility testing for these organisms is often not performed.
